Music is Who I Am

I am a musician.

I am a flute player.

By definition, I am a student of music who plays the flute.

Who knows why flutes in the altissimo range were built sharper than sharp?

Who knows why the high C facilitator key is on a flute, if it serves no function other than to facilitate the fourth octave C?

I don't.

I am a chorister.

By definition, I am a student of music who sings, i.e. a vocalist.

Who knows why sopranos tend to sing flatter and flatter in a capella music?

Who knows why basses are the strongest sight-readers of a choir?

I don't.

I am a theorist.

By definition, I am a student of music who creates peaceful melodies of chaotic theories.

Who really knows if Bach didn't care about those "egregious errors" that we Theory kids work so hard to avoid?

Who knows why was HE the standard, and no one else?

Who knows why Sprechstimme never made it big?

I don't.

I am a musician.

I am a strong sight-reader. I am strong in flute technique. I have perfect pitch.

I have been called an excellent musician, have been told I have a beautiful tone, both on flute and on vocals, and have been consistently one of the best, if not the best, students in my class.

I have never played a piece of Grade 5+ (Class 1) music perfectly.

I have never performed a flute solo for Solo and Ensemble without mistakes, or ever learned certain parts of those solos cleanly.

I have never studied properly for a Theory Exam.

I have never sung 100% of the solfege syllables of a sight-reading exercise.

Then again, I haven't ever missed a pitch.

I have always made As on those Exams.

I have always put as much musicality and flute technique into everything I play.

That's not what is important, though.

I am a musician.

Music runs through my veins.

I am also an academic student, but in my heart lies a special desire to be involved in music.

No matter where I go, or what I decide to do after school, music will be with me.

Music can express what words cannot.

It is my second language.

I am a musician, and forever I will be.
